What to Expect at Your Child's First Dance Class

Starting dance classes is exciting—but let's be honest, it can also come with a few nerves for both kids and parents.

If you're joining us for the first time, you may be wondering what that first day will actually look like. At Dance Moves of Charleston, we've spent more than 20 years helping families through those first-day jitters, and we've designed our process to be as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Whether your child runs into class without looking back or clings to your leg at the door, we've seen it all—and we're here to help.

Before Your First Class

One quick tip: if you'd like to use Spot TV to watch your child's class, please make sure your account is set up before the first day.

The first week of classes is one of our busiest times of the year. Our staff's focus is on welcoming students, answering questions, and helping children get settled, so we aren't able to troubleshoot Spot TV accounts during class times.

If you need help, please reach out before classes begin and we'll be happy to point you in the right direction.

Arriving for Class

When you arrive, one of our friendly admin team members will greet your child at the door and check them in. From there, a teacher or staff member will help them get settled and guide them into class.

For younger dancers especially, saying goodbye can be the hardest part. We know it's tempting to linger, but a quick, confident goodbye is usually the best way to help children transition successfully.

To keep our studios safe and comfortable, parents do not come inside at drop-off. Since classes are constantly rotating, we simply don't have the space for both incoming and outgoing families at the same time.

The good news? Parents are welcome inside at pick-up, so you'll still have an opportunity to see the studio and connect with your child's teacher.

If your child tends to be nervous in new environments, we highly recommend scheduling a tour before classes begin. We'd love to show you around and help your child feel comfortable before their first day.

What Happens During Class?

Every class is structured, age-appropriate, and designed to help children feel successful.

For many preschool and beginner dancers, the first class is less about perfect dance steps and more about building confidence, learning routines, and getting comfortable in a new environment.

A typical first class may include:

  • Meeting teachers and classmates

  • Learning classroom expectations

  • A simple warm-up

  • Basic dance movements and terminology

  • Age-appropriate technique instruction

  • Plenty of encouragement and positive reinforcement

Our goal isn't perfection. It's helping your child feel comfortable, confident, and excited to come back next week.

What If My Child Is Shy?

This is one of the most common questions we get from parents.

Some children walk right into class. Others need a little extra time to warm up. Both are completely normal.

Our teachers are experienced in helping children adjust at their own pace. We encourage participation, but we never force it.

In most cases, children settle in quickly once class begins. If your child is having a particularly difficult day and isn't calming down, we'll absolutely come get you. We never allow a child to remain upset for an extended period of time.

Our priority is making sure every dancer feels safe, supported, and successful.

Dance Is About More Than Dance

Of course, your child will learn dance technique and movement skills, but that's only part of what happens in class.

At Dance Moves, we also help children develop:

  • Confidence

  • Listening skills

  • Focus and discipline

  • Teamwork and friendships

  • Respect for teachers and classmates

  • Creativity and self-expression

These are life skills that stay with children long after they leave the dance studio.

Pick-Up Time

When class is over, parents come inside to pick up their child.

Many families enjoy this part of the experience because it gives them a chance to see the studio, connect with staff, and get a glimpse into where their child is spending part of their week.

If you have a quick question for a teacher, pick-up is usually the best time to ask.

What Should My Child Wear?

We do have a dress code for all classes, and you can find everything you need under the "For Parents" section of our website.

Don't panic if you don't have everything by the first class. We understand that sometimes shoes and dancewear take time to arrive. We simply ask that dancers have the correct attire by the second or third week of classes.

We've also made things easy with our online store, where you can quickly see exactly what your child needs for their specific class.

Need help with sizing? We're happy to help! Just schedule a fitting appointment with us outside of class times. Unfortunately, we aren't able to do fittings during classes because our staff is focused on students and instruction.

Final Thoughts

The truth is, the first dance class is often a bigger adjustment for parents than it is for kids.

Our team is here to make the process easy, welcoming, and enjoyable from start to finish. Whether your child is confident from day one or needs a little extra reassurance, we'll meet them where they are and help them grow.

Because at the end of the day, we're not just teaching dance.

We're helping children build confidence, make friends, learn life skills, and discover the joy of movement in a positive, supportive environment.
