Why We Don’t Allow Parents in Our Preschool Dance Classes
Our unique approach to teaching ages 3-5
At Dance Moves of Charleston, we've carefully crafted our preschool dance curriculum to provide the optimal learning environment for young dancers. It is focused primarily on gross motor skill development and, of course, having FUN! We've thoughtfully designed our preschool dance program over the last 22 years to provide the best possible learning environment for our young dancers.
We want to clarify that parents are always welcome in our studio for tours, during drop-off and pick-up times, and to discuss any questions you might have with our staff. Our studio is your studio too, and we love having our dance families feel at home here! However, one policy that sometimes raises questions is our approach to parent observation in the classroom. Here's why we've found our approach works best for everyone involved and how we still allow parents to watch every class:
Creating an Independent Learning Environment
When parents are present in the classroom, most preschoolers naturally focus their attention on the most important person in their life - you! While this connection is beautiful, it often means children won't engage fully with the instructor or the lesson. By creating a parent-free zone, your child can develop their listening skills, follow directions from other trusted adults, and fully participate in the class experience.
Building Confidence Through Independence
One of our primary goals is helping your child build self-confidence. When children learn to navigate a structured class environment on their own, they develop a sense of accomplishment and independence. These early experiences of "I did it all by myself!" create the foundation for growth mindset and resilience.
Ensuring Emotional Wellbeing for All Students
Consider this scenario: a three-year-old sees their friend's parent in class while their own parent couldn't attend due to work or other responsibilities. This can trigger confusion, sadness, and feelings of inequality among the children. By maintaining consistent expectations for all dancers, we create an emotionally safe space where no child feels left out.
You Can Still Watch Every Step!
Thanks to our SpotTV app, you get the best of both worlds. You can watch your child's entire class in real-time from your phone, seeing their growth and joy without creating distractions. Many parents tell us they love seeing how capable their children are when given the space to shine on their own.
The Exception: Parent & Me Classes
For our youngest dancers ages walking-2.5 years, we do offer dedicated Parent & Me classes specifically designed for shared participation. These classes serve a different purpose and are structured accordingly to create bonds between the caretaker and the child.
Dance Education That Goes Beyond Steps
At Dance Moves, we're not just teaching dance technique - we're helping develop strong, independent people. Our preschool classes lay the foundation for both technical skills and personal growth. By giving your child this space to learn independently, you're investing in their development as confident, capable individuals.
We understand entrusting your little one to our care requires trust. That's why we're committed to creating a nurturing, fun, confidence-building environment where each child can thrive - and why we make sure you can still be part of every magical moment through our observation app.
